Background and purpose: Nowadays, occupational stress is a very common and familiar term that engages everyone in some way. In certain professions, such as medicine, this issue is more conspicuous. This research has been conducted to identify occupational stressors specific to gastrointestinal specialists and construct the validation scale for its assessment.
Materials and methods: The present study was a mixed-methods research, meaning that it included both qualitative methods (in the stage of identifying stressor factors) and quantitative methods (in the stage of designing the questionnaire and examining its psychometric properties). In the qualitative section, a qualitative descriptive research method was employed, and the data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Qualitative sampling was done using a convenience method, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 gastrointestinal specialists. The quantitative section was descriptive-survey in nature. In this section, the items of the "Assessment Scale of Gastrointestinal Specialists' Stressful Events" were formulated into a questionnaire based on codes, categories, and themes extracted from the previous stage. Subsequently, the validity and reliability of the questionnaire were examined using a sample of 110 gastrointestinal specialists from across Iran. SPSS-26 and Smart PLS software were used for data analysis.
Finding: The results of the analysis of interviews conducted with participants in the first stage revealed 5 main themes and 18 categories, including Specialized Actions Related to the Gastrointestinal System (Performing diagnostic procedures, Conducting therapeutic procedures, Low-risk complications resulting from procedures, High-risk complications resulting from procedures, Decision-making and diagnosis, Challenging therapeutic responsibilities), Relationships with patients and their companions (challenges in obtaining information from patients, challenges in providing information to patients, and the behavior of patients and their companions), Relationships with colleagues (work-related or non-work-related interactions with colleagues), Human and non-human resources (inefficiency of colleagues, equipment, and individual inefficiency), Individual issues (lack of control and authority to maintain personal time, physical tension and financial issues). Additionally, the quantitative results indicated that the constructed tool possesses acceptable validity and reliability
