Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and inability to concentrate is one of the factors of academic euphoria, and any attempt to reduce the effect of distraction factors can help improve this condition. Through controlled simulation of the real environments, Virtual Reality (VR) technology can be effective in education and treatment of psychological disorders. The aim of this study is to design and validate a VR-based software package, and to investigate its effectiveness on improving symptoms of ADD in students through an introductory intervention.
A VR-based software package, consisting of 18 short footages recorded with 360 degree camera with specific scenarios including various distraction factors, was designed for 9 sessions of therapy. For content validation, the software was presented to five psychologists, and after applying revisory comments, the results of their questionnaires were analyzed to calculate Cohenʹs Kappa coefficient. For introductory intervention, the population comprised all female students with ADD, at grade 6 of elementary school in 2017-18 academic year. A limited sample of 14 people were selected based on entrance criteria and randomly assigned to experiment and control groups. The intervention procedure was carried out for experiment group in 9 weeks, 2 sessions per week, and 2 footages per session, and the control group was in waiting list. The SNAP-IV questionnaire was completed by the parents before and after this period for all the samples and the results were analyzed using Covariance Analysis.
The Cohen’s Kappa Coefficient in this study is 0.83, which shows acceptable content validity. The results of Covariance Analysis of the introductory intervention indicates the effectiveness of VR-based software package on reducing symptoms of ADD in students (F = 203.801, P < 0.05).
Virtual reality technology can help to increase the students’ concentration, and reduce the symptoms of ADD by simulating the distraction factors in a virtual platform. Moreover, the virtual environment can be customized based on the subjects’ characteristics and needs, and form an ideal treatment plan.
