This study aimed to conduct a qualitative content analysis of Islamic narrations (Hadiths) concerning marital virtues. Given the paramount importance of establishing, preserving, and strengthening the institution of marriage and family—and the need for positive, developmental, and preventive approaches grounded in Iranian-Islamic culture—this research investigates how marital virtues, as discussed in international literature, are conceptualized within Islam through its narrative traditions. To deduce these virtues from the hadiths of the Infallibles (AS), primary narrative and hadith sources were consulted. Key keywords were identified, leading to the selection of 222 relevant hadiths through searches in digital databases and printed collections. From these hadiths, 287 conceptual codes were extracted, which were subsequently categorized into 33 sub-themes and finally synthesized into three overarching themes: “God-Centered Virtues,” “Self-Centered Virtues,” and “Other-Centered Virtues.” God-Centered Virtues encompassed the categories of almsgiving, providing family livelihood, husbandʹs guardianship and responsibility, rights-centeredness (observing spousal rights), faith and piety, chastity, a transcendent view of sexual relations, lovemaking, gratitude to God, and patience. Self-Centered Virtues included prudence, fairness, good-naturedness, compassion, faith and piety, contentment, chastity, maintaining oneʹs appearance, and generosity. Other-Centered Virtues comprised providing for the family, support, serving oneʹs spouse and family, compatibility, the husbandʹs care and responsibility, intimacy, providing comfort, rights-centeredness, good-naturedness, mercy, respecting oneʹs spouse, compassion, faith and piety (in relation to choice, spouse, and family), confidentiality, humility, contentment, maintaining appearance, neatness, satisfying sexual needs, a sublime view of sexual relations, love, protectiveness (ghayrat), expressing satisfaction, appreciating oneʹs spouse, caring, tolerance, forgiveness, commitment, and generosity. Based on these findings, it is recommended that both short-term and long-term educational programs based on these identified marital virtues be developed for couples to enhance the quality of marital life.
